Abstract
The essay juxtaposes Russian and English heroic biography written in the nineteenth century and contemporary anti-heroic biographical attempts. Biographies of William Gladstone, the English statesman and political leader, and Alexander Pushkin, the Russian national poet, permit analysis not only of the vicissitudes of the genre, but also the external factors affecting its development.
