Abstract

This chapter proposes a second-by-second analysis of individual journey experiences. The physical, sensory, social and emotional features of two motorcyclists’ and three cyclists’ journeys are presented, with the aim at identifying commonalities and differences, and to reflect upon the connections between the tangible and intangible elements of tourist travel. Journey experiences are confirmed to be eudaimonic, emotionally rich escapist experiences, where individuals, modes and contextual conditions are combined to form a unique and composite space-time mix. Based on the evidence collected, the personas methodology helps to transform the thick descriptions at individual level into fictitious characters—the personas—to enable future tourism and transport planning.
