Abstract

Time dependent forces and moments are generated by the blades of a marine propeller operating in the irregular inflow at the stern of a ship. These unsteady loads may damage the blades and can also lead to excessive vibratory loading of the propulsion system and the hull, and cause annoyance of persons on board. Therefore, upper limits for the propeller induced vibratory loads should be introduced. As a consequence a procedure is necessary with which the unsteady hydrodynamic loading caused by the inhomogeneities of the propeller inflow can be obtained. It is apparent that a formal mathematical treatment of the problem using the nominal velocity distribution in the plane of the propeller as input would require considerable computing and numerical evaluation. Consequently simplified methods have been developed to calculate unsteady blade loading, and these methods are described in the report.
