Abstract

During the course of experiments in point plane gaps in SF6, an interesting phenomenon was observed in that when the gap voltage was suddenly removed, restrikes were observed in corona streamer channels which had previously propagated from the point electrode. Theoretical considerations suggested that by measuring the inception voltage for such restrikes, an assessment could be made of the electric field in the channel. Results are presented which indicate that there is no unique field for the pressure-reduced electric field in the channel. It would appear to be a function of both the gas pressure and also the electrode geometry.
