Abstract

A schlieren system and an image-convertor camera have been used to observe the propagation of leader discharges in a 30 mm point-plane gap in SF6 under positive impulse-voltage application. Leaders are found to propagate from the point when the gas pressure and applied voltage are above a critical level. They develop in a step-wise fashion, with each step having a length which increases with applied voltage and decreases with gas pressure.
