Abstract

The application of lasers in restoration and conservation of artworks covers a wide field ranging from the cleaning of stone and metal statues and reliefs, cleaning of coins, pottery, medieval stained glass, paintings, frescos, textiles, parchments, and whole buildings. Of increasing importance is the analysis of artworks using, e.g., pulsed-laser ablation together with optical spectroscopy or mass spectrometry. The latter also permits the dating of organic materials via the carbon 14C method.
