Abstract

Impacts of global change in periglacial environments are most readily observed in measurable changes in permafrost and related landforms. Impacts include decreased permafrost extent, permafrost warming, and thickening of the active layer. Impacts on landforms include thermokarst subsidence, increased hillslope instability, enhanced fluvial erosion, ice wedge degradation, frost mound thawing, thaw lake expansion, degradation of palsas, and permafrost coastal erosion. These landscape changes represent significant increases in natural hazards.
