Abstract

Impacts of global warming on periglacial environments are most apparent in permafrost and related landforms. Impacts include permafrost retreat, permafrost warming, and thickening of the active layer. Impacts on landforms include thermokarst subsidence, increased hillslope instability, enhanced fluvial and lacustrine erosion, ice wedge degradation, frost mound thawing, thaw lake expansion, and degradation of palsas. These landscape changes represent significant natural hazards for inhabitants of landscapes underlain by permafrost.
