Abstract

The following conclusions are made based on the experimental results discussed herein. The sensitivity of the LOFT cobalt SPNDs to reactor core moderator density fluctuations has been clearly established. The response of these detectors to density fluctuations during the blowdown and reflood phases of LOFT LOCEs L2-2 and L2-3 was shown to be reproducible. That is, similar density variations in L2-2 and L2-3 resulted in similar SPND responses. In addition, these results are consistent with the theoretical SPND response. The SPNDs are sensitive to reactor vessel water level fluctuations and have the potential to monitor PWR reactor vessel water level during small break LOCA conditions.
