Abstract

SummaryA manurial trial is used to study the relationships between growth and cropping of apple trees in response to treatments. Relationships within growth records and cropping records are little affected by treatments. Root-stock variation is mainly the result of differences in balance between growth and cropping, while differential potash affects all activities of the tree equally. Use of idealized vectors, which are the sum and difference of growth and cropping variates, is advocated. These vectors are used to classify root-stocks in terms of vigour and fruitfulness.
