Abstract

Onsite and Decentralized wastewater systems constitute a safe and effective means to treat, renovate and recycle over 4 billion gallons of domestic wastewater per day (USEPA, 2003). The USEPA has supported the development of comprehensive design and management programs to assure these elements of the wastewater infrastructure remain sustainable components of the Nations wastewater infrastructure. This paper describes USEPA and associated efforts to sustain and support onsite and decentralized wastewater systems. Use of these resources will better enable practitioners to utilize onsite wastewater systems as an element of infrastructure. This paper is not intended to add to the scientific literature, rather to provide a summary of programs available in support of onsite efforts.
