Abstract

We develop a theory of the conductance of a multichannel double barrier system in the case of decoupled channels. In the frame of the Landauer-B\"uttiker formalism we find two basic contributions to the conductance: first, a resonant one described by a Fano profile with a complex asymmetry parameter and second a noncoherent background which can be assumed as a constant in the case of small overlap of the conductance peaks. We establish a method to reconstruct the S matrix from the experimental conductance data.
