Abstract
Molecular Biology RNA-DNA hybrid structures called R-loops formed during gene transcription can alter gene expression. Jiang et al. found that the Microprocessor complex resolved R-loops for ribosomal protein–encoding genes. Mice deficient in the Microprocessor complex component Drosha had decreased ribosomal protein abundance and protein synthesis in erythrocyte progenitor cells, as well as defects in erythropoiesis that resembled anemias caused by ribosome insufficiency or dysfunction. Nutrient deprivation induced the degradation of Drosha, which suppressed protein synthesis. Sci. Signal. 14 , eabd2639 (2021).
