Abstract
RATIONALE: Excessive subepithelial matrix deposition may contribute to obstructive physiology in asthma. This can result from the discoordinate regulation of matrix active cytokines, structural proteins, and protease: anti-protease activities. RELM-β, a hormone with cytokine activities, produced under Th2-type immune regulation in mice, was implicated in airway remodelling. We hypothesized that RELM-β exerts pro-fibrotic effects through modulating activation of the ECM family of proteins involved in the allergic airway inflammation.
