Abstract
Abstract A heat-stable ribonuclease, purified from Enterobacter sp., catalyzes the stoichiometric conversion of polycytidylic aicd to to 2', 3'-cyclic cytidylic acid, but does not hydrolyze the homopolymers polyadenylic acid, polyuridylic acid, and polyguanylic acid. Heteropolymers containing cytidylic acid and yeast RNA are also degraded by the enzyme, but there is no reaction detectable with calf thymus DNA. Representative products of the enzymatic hydrolysis of yeast RNA have been characterized, and these suggest that the hydrolysis of RNA is residue-specific.
