Abstract

The alternative services of Series Two, unlike those of Series One, appeared over a period of years. The first instalment (1966) consisted of Morning and Evening Prayer, Burial, and Thahksgiving after Childbirth, with an unfinished draft of Holy Communion. Burial met with opposition from the Evangelical party over prayer for the dead, and was rejected. So also, for no apparent reason, was Thanksgiving after Childbirth. Morning and Evening Prayer, a conservative revision, was passed, though docked of a large section of prayers, thanksgivings and litanies. Holy Communion, though intended only as a progress report, was given a very warm welcome, and an overwhelming demand was made for its immediate authorization. The Liturgical Commission held one further meeting to finish the draft, after which the service was returned to the Church Assembly.KeywordsBritish IsleInstitution NarrativeOfthe WordPrayer BookOverwhelming DemandThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
