Abstract

ABSTRACT Several mathematicians have expressed their criticism of calculus instruction and some have developed innovations. This paper reviews the criticisms and innovations and then questions the approach and the emphasis of the reformers. * Based on a presentation given at the Conference on the Teaching of Calculus held at Harvard University on 12–13 June 1992.
