Abstract

Due to the advantages of flexible control, good power quality, and convenient connection to distributed energy, flexible DC distribution networks have become a hot research topic around the world. However, the protection and location technologies for DC distribution networks are one of the main technical difficulties that confine their large-scale application, so it is necessary to overcome these difficulties as a matter of urgency. This paper presents an overall introduction to the research statuses of the fault features, protection principles, and fault location technologies of a DC distribution network. First, the fault features of a flexible DC distribution network are analyzed based on two-level VSC converter and modular multilevel converter. Second, the protection principles and fault location technologies of a DC distribution network as well as the main principles, advantages, and disadvantages of different technologies are analyzed. Third, the outlook for the development of protection and location technologies for a DC distribution network is determined.
