Abstract

There is a complicated interaction between urban transport and urban sprawl under transit-oriented development (TOD) model which is a typical urban planning guided by public transport. In this paper, we propose a method to establish a constrained cellular automata (CA) to simulate the progress of urban growth. The approach regards urban rail transit as a major constraint. And we define the TOD index to describe the relationship between the transit station and the TOD model. This method is implemented in the area of Beijing's Fifth Ring. We compare the results based on the constrained CA simulation with reality. The results suggest that effect of Beijing's TOD mode is not obvious. We contend that our method could be a helpful transport planning tool.
