Abstract

About 20 Mg-Pt alloys were prepared in the portion of the system included between o% and 78 wt. % Pt ( ca. 30 at. % Pt). They were subjected to chemical analysis, specific gravity determination, X-ray and micrographic examinations. In the range of composition stated, the existence is deduced of an eutectic point ( ca. 7.6 at. % Pt and 575°C, in close analogy with what occurs in the Mg-Au system) and of at least 2 intermediary phases (analogous with those previously found in the Mg-Pd system), viz.: ζ phase (solid solution region around a composition such as Mg 6Pt, face-centered cubic); δ phase (corresponding to the Mg 3Pt compound). The crystal structure of Mg 3Pd and Mg 3Pt (both hexagonal Na 3As type) was determined and the results are briefly discussed.
