Abstract

Abstract Variable-speed pumped storage unit demonstrates rapid power response and flexible adjustment of unit speed, significantly enhancing unit operational efficiency and the power system’s stability. This paper focuses on simulating the control strategy of the Fengning variable-speed pumped storage unit. First, the water pump/turbine and motor models are established based on the relevant parameters of the Fengning variable-speed pumped storage unit. Second, according to the distinct responsibilities of the governor and the excitation system, the control strategies of the unit in the power priority mode and speed priority mode are designed. Finally, we compare and analyze the power response characteristics of a single-machine infinite bus system under various operating conditions and control strategies. We also summarize the applicable scope and existing problems under different operating conditions.
