Abstract
The current methods for evaluating the low temperature properties of asphalt only consider the mechanical properties of asphalt at a constant temperature, and cannot fully consider the effect of physical hardening on the low temperature properties of asphalt. This paper developed a test system for the low temperature viscoelastic fracture behavior of asphalt binders, and carried out the single-edged notched trabecular bending experiments. The effects of different physical hardening times and different temperatures on the low temperature fracture characteristics of 90# matrix asphalt, commercial SBS modified asphalt and self-made rubber asphalt binder were investigated, respectively. Furthermore, complementary evaluation of the low temperature performance of asphalt by fracture performance parameters was carried out. The experimental results show that deepening the physical hardening of the asphalt binder and extending the temperature both make it less resistant to fracture at low temperatures. It is also verified the validity of the test system and test method for the low temperature viscoelastic fracture behavior of asphalt binders.
