Research on COVID-19 pandemic's clinical features and risk factors for long-term hospitalizations

Abstract

The authors of this study were interested in learning more about the clinical aspects of COVID-19 and risk factors associated with in-hospital mortality among older patients in hospitals due to the established association between advanced age and poor prognosis. This nationwide, multicenter, retrospective, observational study comprised patients aged 80 and up hospitalized during the COVID-19 pandemic. There had been no previous evaluation of reliance and mortality in COVID-19 pandemic patients over the age of 65, but this study indicated that it was an independent predictor. Despite greater rates of severe reliance among individuals residing in nursing homes, the study found that survival rates for the elderly in these settings were comparable to those of the elderly in their own homes. This study emphasizes the necessity of assessing the functional state of very elderly hospitalized patients having the COVID-19 pandemic and sheds light on the risk variables associated with death in this population.
