Abstract

Resilient packet ring (RPR) is the main trend for metropolitan area networks (MAN). At present, it is still in the early research and development stage. Bandwidth (BW) management is an important subject of media access control (MAC) in RPR networks. Based on studying a series of proposed standard drafts of BW management, we present a new BW management mechanism of RPR. By using BW allocation and access rate control, the new mechanism can achieve maximum BW capacity of the ring and avoid head-of-line (HOL) blocking of the network.
