Abstract

Resilient packet ring (RPR) is a next generation protocol for packet-based traffic in metropolitan area networks and wide area networks. The key feature of RPR is its built-in fairness algorithm that fairly and intelligently distributes bandwidth of the link among all the nodes in the ring. However, the existing fairness algorithm causes the nodes to introduce a tremendous amount of oscillation of throughput under congested situations. In this paper we introduced fuzzy logic control (FLC) to solve this problem. We first discuss the architecture of the FLC that we integrated with RPR, then use OPNET as the simulation platform to compare the result between existing fairness algorithm and our FLC system to demonstrate that FLC is an effective method in reducing the oscillation caused by congestion in RPR.
