Abstract

We are carrying out a preliminary investigation of the use of a generalized phrase structre grammar (the formulation of context-free grammars developed in [1] and related works) as the basis for a modular and linguistically robust natural language processor. The grammar is generated from a kernel set of rules, plus a set of metarules that expand the kernel into the full rule set used for processing English. This greatly simplifies the task of testing and modifying the grammar.
