Abstract

School leadership has taken on increased importance for policy makers in recent times. The National College for School Leadership (NCSL) in England is one manifestation of this trend. NCSL’s research focuses on what is known about effective and innovative leadership practices in English schools and in other countries. This article draws on NCSL’s research to provide an overview of what we know about successful school leadership. Seven key findings are presented: context matters; leading learning; core tasks of leaders; distributing leadership matters; leadership succession; that leadership is hard work; and that the work is polyphonic. The article concludes with the idea that leadership development and capacity building are critical to school and system success.
