Abstract

At the Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Desalting Plant (YDP), Arizona, USA, engineers face challenges in operating the pretreatment processes, operating and storing the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane elements, and disposing of the pretreatment solid wastes. Reclamation has undertaken an extensive research program to meet these engineering challenges. This paper presents some of the research efforts and results in the four areas of RO membrane fouling, RO membrane degradation, RO element storage, and disposal of calcium carbonate sludge. The goal of these research efforts is to develop solutions to operational difficulties both at the YDP and at other desalting plants facing similar difficulties.
