Abstract

In the United States, the knowledge and skills required for surgical research are acquired almost exclusively in university programs. While many of the 292 surgical training programs encourage residents to pursue a period of research, only a small minority require a research rotation, and very few have well-developed curricula that provide reliable training in scientific methodology, organization of research projects, funding, analysis of data, and publication.
