Abstract

ABSTRACTWe report on the influence of the different specifications of a single emitter laser diode(type A) and a laser diode (LD) of the partially phase locked type (type B), on somecharacteristics ofour diode pumped solid state lasers (DPSSL). We find that the use ofthe type B LD is preferable to that oftype A with respect to smaller M2 ofthe DPSSL-beam, superior noise behavior, and smaller full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the LD emission. Keywords: DPSSL, LD, beam quality, M2, intra cavity frequency doubling 1 . INTRODUCTION In the recent years, diode pumped solid state lasers (DPSSL) have gained an important role in thelaser market. This is because of the unique advantages that DPSSLs offer compared to e.g. gas lasers. In the fields where DPSSLs are applied, the demands on the perfonnance of the lasers are quite high.Life time ofthe DPSSL should be well above 10,000 hours, the beam should be Gaussian-shaped withan M2 smaller than 1.2, and noise has to be lower than 1 %.Besides the construction of the cavity and the elements building the cavity, the characteristics of thepumping diode has a significant influence on the performance ofthe DPSSL.
