Abstract

In the process of developing a program of liaison child psychiatry at the neonatal intensive care unit, the child psychiatry department studied the parents'and staff's experiences and perceptions of the premature infant. Semi-structured interviews were first done with the entire staff ( n = 23) and later with those parents ( n = 21) willing to participate in the study. The results highlighted the nature of the difficulties experienced by all parties concerned and served as a basis for developing a holistic program of care.
