Abstract

Subject Opposition politics in Uganda. Significance In May, popular musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi (better known as ‘Bobi Wine’) and veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye announced a joint front to unseat President Yoweri Museveni. A common opposition platform has long been seen as a key prerequisite to ending Museveni’s 30-year rule, but has historically proven elusive given Uganda’s fractured opposition landscape. Impacts The pact will rattle the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), whose dominance has hitherto partly depended on opposition disunity. The opposition front will likely combine elements of protest and electoral mobilisation in its strategy. Increasing political polarisation could produce recurrent domestic turbulence in the long lead-up to the 2021 elections.
