Abstract

Considering the ethnic and racial issues in the school context, this work established the following objectives: a) understand the representations of the teacher and elementary school students about the ethnic-racial relations in the school context, b) verify if teachers have knowledge about the law no. 10.369/2003 and content related to African history and culture; c) analyzing the representations of teachers and students in a situation of ethnic and racial discrimination. The descriptive study presents a qualitative research approach. The participants were 21 students and a teacher of the fifth year of elementary school. As a procedure, we used semi-structured interviews and a problem situation followed by questions related to it. The results indicated that there is little knowledge from the teacher and students about the history of Africa. Considering the ethnic and racial issues, the most of students are able to identify discriminatory situations and judge them as bad.
