Abstract

Community care was originally based on the principle of removing people with mental health problems from large institutions and allowing them to regain a place in their own community. However, it is a policy which has often received a bad press due, in part, to high profile cases such as the murder of Jonathan Zito by Christopher Clunis in 1993 and the perception that people with mental health problems were being forced to live on the streets because of a lack of resources.
