Abstract

The activities of the Committee on Rainfall for the past year are reported upon under the following headings: International bibliography—Contributions to American literature in the field of rainfall-measurement and analysis were assembled and abstracted for the international bibliography by Miss Mary O. Soroka, member of the Committee. Miss Soroka had prepared the Committee's contribution to the bibliography for the year 1937 and the Committee is again indebted to her for this distinctly important service. Hydrometeorological studies—The hydrometeorological studies of storm-rainfall made by the United States Weather Bureau for the United States Corps of Engineers are progressing satisfactorily. There are now 26 persons engaged in the studies. Authorization has been given to expand the project to include special studies for the conservancy-agencies of the Department of Agriculture. The objective of these investigations is to delineate, for particular basins involving the design of flood-control works, the maximum possible storm. Methods and techniques are rapidly being improved. To date the Hydrometeorological Section of the United States Weather Bureau has issued reports on seven specific basins and has analyzed in varying degree approximately 200 storms.
