Abstract
We thank Dr. Pontiroli for his interest in our recent article1 and for bringing up the points he stated. We did not intend to imply that the favorable autonomic changes we saw would be limited to any specific form of weight loss, only that the profound weight loss associated with gastric bypass surgery in our study population was associated with these improvements. We also agree that a more detailed evaluation of autonomic function before and after weight loss is warranted. The Utah Obesity Study2 was an extensive evaluation; however, it did not include Holter monitoring or other more specific autonomic measurements in its design.
