Abstract
We appreciate this opportunity to respond to and support the importance of pharmacists in the medication use process in computerized physician order entry (CPOE) environments. While in reports of our research we have not explicitly proposed new roles or workflow practices for the pharmacist in CPOE settings, our findings do support Bhosle and Sansgiry's recommendation that inclusion of pharmacists as part of a multidisciplinary “team approach” is essential for successful CPOE implementation. However, while we believe that pharmacy practice will change significantly due to CPOE, we do not believe that computer-aided pharmacist order entry in the narrow sense described by Bhosle and Sansgiry could fulfill the promise of CPOE. Due to the current focus on patient safety, and reduction of medication errors in particular,1 inclusion of the skills and domain knowledge of the pharmacist is vital in the order entry process. Our research team has been fortunate in having a pharmacist (JDC) as a team member since 2000. He has authored a paper describing the role of the pharmacist related to CPOE, and his research indicates that pharmacist roles in patient and staff education, monitoring, and gathering and recording reliable allergy and medication histories may be expanded in CPOE environments.2 Informants in that …
