Abstract

Epitaxial yttrium iron garnet films were prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on Czochralski-grown garnet substrates. X-ray double crystal topographs of the films show no replication of the growth band and core contrast seen in substrate topographs. This behavior is markedly different from that of gallium substituted rare earth and yttrium iron garnet films which replicate the band and core structures with high fidelity. Thus the replication of these structures by epitaxial garnet films may be attributed to distribution of the substituent, in this case gallium, to provide a lattice parameter variation in the film which matches that of the substrate.
