Abstract
Abstract Leisure investigators in the last few years have criticized traditional (quantitative) approaches to leisure research. A growing number of researchers are increasingly advocating the use of qualitative research methods in leisure research. This paper begins by comparing qualitative and quantitative research strategies in terms of their respective paradigmatic assumptions. Second, the paper shows the unique understandings of leisure involvement that are gleaned from utilizing a qualitative research process. This includes a discussion of the experience of leisure within the context of day-to-day activity, leisure behavior as a formative process, and leisure behavior as a group phenomenon. Lastly, the paper discusses the future of qualitative research in leisure studies. Specific attention is directed to the variables which may determine the extent to which qualitative research studies are dissiminated.
