Abstract

Abstract The static electric quadrupole moments Q 2 + of the first 2 + states of 106 Cd and 114 Cd were measured by the reorientation effect, using a particle-γ coincidence technique. The attenuation of the γ-ray angular distribution due to the hyperfine interaction was measured and its effect found to be important for the determination of the quadrupole moments. The values of Q 2 + obtained range from −0.63 b to −0.99 b for 106 Cd and from −0.21 b to −0.52 b for 114 Cd. The measured value for 114 Cd is 46 % of the value obtained without accounting for the hyperfine attenuation.
