Abstract

The impact of and the experience gained in renal transplantation has resulted in the development of newer techniques to treat various vascular and urological conditions of the kidney which otherwise might have resulted in serious renal function impairment or even nephrectomy. Among the vascular problems which can be successfully managed by extracorporeal renal surgery and auto-transplantation are renal artery stenosis from atheroma, fibromuscular disease, aneurysms, narrowing of segmental branches of the renal artery and renal trauma involving the vascular pedicle (1–9). There are many urological conditions which are best treated by work bench surgery and autotransplantation such as high stricture or injury of the ureter, recurrent Staghorn calculi, renal tumours in solitary kidney and renal trauma (9–13).
