Abstract

The number of percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) is increasing in the UK with over 53 000 carried out annually in the UK (British Heart Foundation (BHF), 2005). Cardiac arrhythmias are also an area of concern for cardiac nurses because they affect more than one million people in the UK and are consistently one of the top ten reasons for hospital admission (Arrhythmia Alliance, 2006). Nurses working in the area of cardiac care often encounter patients who require investigation and treatment of these conditions.
