Abstract

The author reports on proceedings of an all-USSR conference on Remote Sensing and Regional Biosphere and Ecological Research held outside Moscow in April 1990. Basic themes included general remote sensing concepts and approaches in geo-ecological research, use of remote sensing to identify space-time parameters of environmental change, new technologies and methods, geographic information systems in environmental research, and specific applications of remote sensing at particular locations (e.g., Aral Sea, Lake Baykal, Astrakhan' gas condensate plant). The paper concludes with an interesting discussion of current practical problems (funding, etc.) inhibiting expansion of remote sensing in the USSR. Translated by Elliott B.
