His first collection of stories, Lantern Lectures, won a Somerset Maugham Award in 1982. He is also the author of The Darker Proof: Stories from a Crisis (with Edmund White) and Monopolies of Loss, and the editor of Mae West Is Dead: Recent Gay and Lesbian Fiction. His most recent novel is The Water of Thirst.
