Abstract
and His Time: Master-works from the Albertina explores the rich artistic culture of the Northern Netherlands in the seventeenth century. This book examines the work of such important artists as Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael, Meincleit Hobbema, Philips Koninck, and many of their contemporaries. The numerous types of Dutch art that dominated seventeenth-century Holland are explored - landscape, genre, still life, seascape, biblical and mythological subjects - as well as the societal and political context that encouraged such richness and diversity. The meteoric career of Rembrandt underlies the themes of the catalogue and provides important reference points for understanding this stunning group of images.
