Abstract

We reinvestigate the relativistic Thomas-Fermi model and its lowest order gradient corrections and propose a simple scheme which yields an integrable density in the case of atoms with point nuclei. The scheme is based on the recognition, that vacuum polarisation effects are included in the density operator leading to the relativistic Thomas-Fermi and Thomas-Fermi-Weizsacker models.
