Abstract

Heartburn and constipation are typically listed among the minor disorders of pregnancy, however, for those women suffering from one or both of these conditions they can be both distressing and disabling. The midwife will be a vital source of information to the woman, both in terms of her understanding of the condition and her access to treatment. Heartburn is a common complaint, with an estimated two in three women suffering at some time during their pregnancy. Constipation also affects about one in five pregnant women and is more common in the last trimester and the postnatal period. This article will discuss the aetiology of these conditions and suggest effective treatments.
