Abstract

IEEE 802.16 OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) system does not support reliable medium access control (MAC) layer multicast services. However, reliable multicast services must be supported in this system, because the status indications based on the ARQ mechanism of the subscriber stations (SSs) are required in some multicast services. Therefore, we propose a new scheme to support reliable MAC layer multicast services using cumulative ACK (CA) code and ARQ feedback request (AFR) code. In this paper, we analyze packet error rate (PER), and required uplink resources in case of our proposed scheme compared with the original scheme using unicast ARQ feedback messages against various wireless channel environments. Through the performance analysis, we can show that our scheme can save a lot of uplink resources compared with the original scheme. Using our proposed scheme, we can support reliable multicast services without a waste of a lot of uplink resources.
