Abstract

An inexpensive heterodyne-beat solution dipole moment apparatus has been developed which employs solid state circuitry for stability. The stationary nickel cell eliminates capacitance changes in the leads due to movement, and a Thermotrimmer in the circuity reduces sensitivity of the circuits to temperature changes of the room. An inexpensive milliammeter in place of an oscilloscope eliminates the appearance of more than one null reading in the measurement of capacitances. Dielectric constant data for several compounds are presented which yield dipole moments precise to within 0.02 D with up to 12 months between measurements.
