Abstract

Objective To analyze relevant factors of recurrent ischemic stroke in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods A total of 220 elderly patients with ischemic stroke complicated with T2DM admitted to Linfen People’s Hospital from March 2014 to June 2017 were selected, including 43 patients with recurrent ischemic stroke (recurrence group), and 177 patients with recurrent ischemic stroke (non-recurrent group). The general conditions, past medical history, and biochemical parameters of the two groups were compared. And multivariate analysis was performed using Logistic regression equations. Results The general data of 220 patients were used as variables for univariate analysis. The proportion of hypertension, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, smoking history and physical activity in the recurrence group was higher than that in the non-recurrent group (P<0.05). Hypertension and smoking history were associated with recurrence of ischemic stroke in elderly patients with T2DM (OR=3.05, 1.534; P=0.001, 0.012). Conclusions Hypertension and smoking are the main factors related to the recurrence of ischemic stroke in elderly patients with T2DM. Timely and effective control of blood pressure and smoking cessation may be effective measures to prevent recurrence of ischemic stroke. Key words: Type 2 diabetes; Ischemic stroke; Recurrence; Advanced age
